“If I could devote my life over again, I would devote it to proving that germs seek their natural habitat, diseased tissue–rather than being the cause of the diseased tissue.” - Rudolph Virchow
To set the tone I chose a quote that was within the realm of terrain theory. Rudolph Virchow was a German physician and among the most prominent of the 19th century. He believed disease primarily started in the cell and believed that cancer was at its root an inflammation problem. I’ll probably look more into him in the future. But for now, we can continue through the book, Strong Medicine…
The reason I wanted to set the tone with terrain theory is due to the fact that Dr. Donaldson holds more of a germ theory lens but luckily he is not too much of a vaxx pusher and even acknowledges that they have limited effectiveness. As you’ll read, he is approaching everything from a germ theory lens and based on some observations makes an educated guess on what the solution should be. This is one thing I learned back in 2019, if your worldview is not providing answers or a coherent picture, alter it or find a new one.
I believe that if Donaldson had access to alternative worldviews he would have been able to come up with some better and solid solutions. Depending on how certain microbes enter our bodies there might be a problem. But as long as you're not bathing at the bottom of your average construction zone porta john you’ll be fine.
There are pitfalls you can avoid and practices to add to your daily life that will yield better results than the solutions they give us.
“Studies” and Observations
“The contagious nature of the common cold is obvious to anyone, but has been particularly well demonstrated by using the ferret as an experimental animal. This member of the weasel family contracts a viral cold with great ease. An absolutely windless tunnel twenty feet long, two feet in diameter, and bent at right angles can be constructed. At one end of the tunnel is placed a cage containing a ferret that has been inoculated with a viral cold. At the other end a healthy ferret is placed in another cage. Within a few hours the healthy ferret contracts the cold. It is small wonder that these pandemics of influenza sweep over the world. ” (P 156)
One thing I have come to realize is that not all experiments are created equal. Everyone has biases whether they know it or not. Mine is that I’m as skeptical of Modern Medicine as Modern Medicine fanboys are skeptical of things like bloodletting or cocaine medicine. With the above experiment, if the people conducting the experiment have a germ theory paradigm they will automatically believe that the other ferret got sick due to a tiny virus floating through the air and entering his body. Your lens affects your conclusions.
The common argument aimed at terrain theorists is often, “Then what made them sick?!?!?”
There are elements in our modern world, mostly manmade, that cause our cells to go from working properly to becoming damaged and going through a process of self-repair. For these ferrets, I have a number of questions about how this experiment was conducted.
Were they indoors and separated from sunlight?
Did they have a connection with the ground?
Was the food they we given of high quality?
Where there any radio towers nearby?
Were they wondering why they were alone in a cage and became depressed?
Did they figure out why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
Without fully adopting a terrain theory lens or being a germ theory fanboy, one could ask what other factors could have caused the animal's bodies to go into a state of disarray.
In addition to this, he mentioned the spread of influenza. If you know about certain experiments conducted before this time you will know that theories on the spread of these viruses are not foolproof.
And there are other explanations as to what causes influenza and the Spanish flu back in the day…
“The crowded conditions in which many of us work and live promote the spread of infection. Factories, big staffs in offices, the subways, theaters, stores, the military services—all can be blamed.” (P 157)
These conditions I believe do bring about more illness but not for the reasons that Dr. Donaldson believes.
Lack of sunlight
Bathing in dirty electricity
And around this time fat substitutes like Crisco and seed oils were making their rounds.
If everybody within the city was engaging in these 5 things then they were bound to be screwed up. This is one of the reasons I don’t like being in the city. It's just a powder keg of agitated and sick individuals just waiting to pop off in the form of a peaceful protest. These 15-minute cities I keep hearing about sound like a load of fun though…
“The liver took over and a good bowel movement and good night’s sleep were followed by cure.” (P 158)
In terrain theory, most symptoms are a tool for the body to try and rid itself of toxins. Sweat, watery eyes, coughing, a runny nose, etc. This is why I wouldn’t recommend eating Jimmy Johns while on a construction job.
Sometimes when I’m sick, or extinguishing toxins in terrain speak, I’ll try to make the bedroom slightly warmer than usual to bring about somewhat more sweating though not too much(I’m not trying to die here). The trick is to stay hydrated to improve the drainage. This along with another method I’ll explain down below has personally helped me during such periods.
I’ve heard anecdotes about the benefits of using saunas to fight sickness although finding studies on it are hard to come by. Most of the science is saying no to saunas due to the heat stress and possible dehydration. However, there are some theorized benefits to sweating concerning health2.
“But the common contagious cold grinds along remorselessly through all of its various stages and continues to defy any specific treatment. Efforts to prevent it by viral vaccination have not been impressive so far. Treatment with the powerful new antibiotics and sulfa drugs seems useless and can prolong the prostration by adding the shattering effect of drug therapy to the load. Then too antibiotics and sulfa drugs may induce an attack of hives which is worse than the cold.” (P 158 )
If I was on the range and none of my shots were hitting their target there were a couple of factors. Either I was squeezing the trigger too fast/hard, I wasn't adjusting for the wind, or I wasn’t looking down my sights properly. Worst-case scenario, my sights were not properly calibrated at the start of the week which would disqualify me from participating on the range. Which meant I would have to come back and try all over again. If you’re not hitting the target, something needs to change. If the common cold is defying treatments then maybe there needs to be a better perspective. Maybe the sights of modern industrial medicine aren’t properly calibrated.
Sugar and Remedies
“Then I tell the patient that the liver has two important functions. One is to screen the blood of irritants, including virus and bacterial infections. A contagious cold is a blood-stream infection with virus. Another function of the liver is to make sugar. Conceivably a liver that is given lots of sugar can devote more time to killing bugs.” p 159
After this quote, he mentions a recipe he gave to his patients to fight sickness which was lemonade with brown sugar in it. My experience is that sugar extends my period of illness. When I have the will to fight against my sweet tooth my symptoms pass a great deal quicker. To speed up the process I’ll throw in some apple cider vinegar mixed with water throughout the day as well.
There are studies3 that have found a connection between high glucose levels and more severe influenza as well.
Vaccines & Germ Theory
“An emulsion of a child’s spinal cord obtained immediately after a death from poliomyelitis can be sprayed into the nose of a susceptible monkey. The monkey will not contract polio. But if, preceding this performance, the monkey’s nose has been sprayed with argyrol, silver nitrate, cocaine, or even plain mineral oil, then infection with polio can take place like a shot. No! The nose is holy ground. Whenever possible, stay out of it. “ (p 160)
If you spray cocaine and silver nitrate into anything it will probably not end well…
Once I started going down the terrain theory rabbit hole I started to take notice of the weird experiments and lengths scientists will go to to prove that certain diseases are transmissible. Heck, when you look into what they talk about when they say that a virus has been, “Isolated” you’ll find interesting things as well.
“Forty years of experience with allergic patients has convinced me that in such people contagious colds can be markedly reduced by adherence to primitive food and by vaccination with foreign protein. What part the routine nine injections of foreign protein every three years plays I don’t know, I only know that it seems to work.” (P 160)
Yay on the primitive food, exnay on the foreign protein. After this, he mentions that he’s not sure of the benefits of injection with a foreign protein(like boiled skim milk) but it's more based on correlation. It could be that primitive food is doing most of the heavy lifting.
“But what physicians are interested in is the truth and so far, after some years of intensive use of the vaccine, there seems to be no definite decrease in the disease. We know that viral vaccines for influenza and contagious colds have not been particularly efficient. Many of us have seen dreadful reactions, with permanent injury to the nervous system, from such simple things as smallpox vaccination. There are four problems to be considered in any mass immunization of a nation.” (P 163)
Thank you, Sir, and we are still dealing with these problems decades later…
Fresh Air/Nature
“1. If the parents have money enough to afford it, they should get out of town. A pack train trip in the mountains for six weeks will probably free the children from exposure.” (P 162)
One of many natural remedies he’s recommended to parents to fight against polio. But I believe this goes for any disease or ailment in general. Get away from the city, the processed/glyphosate-sprayed food, and telecommunications. Touch some grass. It might help you to fight inflammation better.
Wrap Up
The first half of the book was straight fire. But the deeper I go the more I find questionable things. First was the discarding of epigenetics in favor of genetics for the explanation of diseases and allergies. Now, it's a heavy focus on germ theory. There might be some type of relationship here…
What mainly accounts for illness?
Is it the environment and our lifestyle?
Or is it our genetics and tiny microbes?
If so, what are the solutions?
Clean up our environment and live better?
Or designer babies, hand sanitizer, masks, and vaccines?
Thank you for making it to the end and let me know your thoughts below.
Until next time…
I remember when, as a new deputy reporting to work the jails, the old salts told me that I would get sick. The facility was a large concrete building with no windows. MAYBE once a week, the inmates would be escorted to the excercise yard on the roof, but for the most part, they were locked inside with no access to sunlight or fresh air. As the old veteran deputies warned me, I came down with a nameless malady we called "Jailhouse Crud"...not fatal...but I felt terrible for weeks.
It was King Solomon who once said, "It is good for the eyes to see the sun." That and fresh air can often do more for what ails you than modern medicine!!!
great advice & thanks for the laughter Rx too!
